Missions Monday: Helping Families Help Themselves

Romania 01 2012 from MWBI on Vimeo.

self–suf·fi·cient

 (adjective)

able to maintain oneself or itself without outside aid :capable of providing for one's own needs

(Merriam-Webster)

One of the sad and happy parts of co-sponsoring a family is watching them "graduate" from the sponsorship. Sad that you no longer correspond/assist them.  But also very glad because they have made huge steps toward self sufficiency.  That is at the core of the family sponsorship program.  And that's what I like best about Mission Without Borders.  It's even in their mission statement:

"Reaching people for Christ: helping thousands of people out of poverty into a sustainable future"

Every body needs a little (or a lot) of help sometimes.  I love that Mission Without Borders works with local churches to "come alongside" families in need and help them reach a point where they can provide for their own needs- and "that they may have something to share with those in need" (Eph 4:28 NIV).

In what ways have people "come alongside" you when you needed some help?  How can you walk alongside someone in need?  MWB is always in need of more people to sponsor families.  Just visit their website for more information!

I know it's a sad day, but truthfully, it's a thankful day. I am sure you are happy when families can stand on their own two feet again!

Finding ways for someone to earn a little extra money to help out when times are tough for them would be one thing that someone could do

Self-sufficiency is, in my opinion, probably the most important part to consider when reaching out to help others. It not only gives them the support that's needed for the time being, but educates them so that once they've reached a stage of betterment, they can continue to do so by relying on their own ability.

I think this program is a wonderful thing to watch families to be able to learn to help themselves
